View from hotel window of the cartoon town of Austin, TX

Out of boredom (and out of money, my mind, morals...) I went to that SXSW thing several weeks ago. Of course, when I agreed to go with the Blogging Svengali I didn't realize we were only staying for the opening round "interactive" geek-fest portion and not the music. I should read things more closely, or keep better friends. (Do you really think you're gonna get my half of the hotel bill, Lock? Sure, when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.)

Even though I spent most of my time watching HBO and avoiding panel discussions, I managed to meet some decent people:

First up, Jackson West of SFist. You are a madman! When you stole that cow and your friend started making it with the cow. I wanna party with you cowboy. Seriously, this dude pulled party moves I haven't seen since college. Well done. Next year in Jerusalem. Neutral turf and all.

Rex of Filmoculous comes across even more culturally savvy in-person than online, if that's possible. He's the guy you want sitting next to you at a dinner party (that is, if you go to such things) so you can just nod, absorb, and chew your food without choking.

Then there's Jason Calacanis. Woo boy. There aren't enough pixels on this screen to describe his charismatic genius. If you only know him from his blogging rants and think he's brash, you're missing the other side. He genuinely loves the "game" of business and I don't think you could knock him off of Cloud 9 with a wrecking ball. I'm tempted to go in stalker-mode and follow him from conference to conference. No one moderates a panel quite like he does. He's a laugh-riot and the life of the party, even if it's an absurdly geeky one. (I think I tried to get him to pay me NOT to blog. Didn't work, but I'm sure he owes me a beer or three.)

Last in this loquacious laundry list of No-Name Droppings (there were many others but time and late-night room service has eroded the sun-burnt memories) is Neal Pollack who was nice enough to accept an apology from me. Word on the street is he's a huge Defamer fan, though who isn't with comedic masterpieces like the David Cross IMterview? (Disclaimer: I rushed the stage, accepted this award and told the crowd I was fired by Gawker Media. Chirping ensued.) Anyway, this one's for you, Neal...

Bonus SXSW pics: Jonno of Fleshbot plays the porn mogul part in real life too. (Sorry, dude.) Other ones assembled here.
