Beyond the Valley of the Phenobarbidols

The Phenobarbidols pop up on some of the Sympathy for the Record Industry compilations I have; decent stuff but I never explored further. Here's an original and a great Blondie cover.

Music for the Last Couple

Dennis Munday's My life with The Jam

I've said it before, I have a bad habit of repeating myself, but if I could only listen to one band's music for the rest of my life (an admittedly absurd low-percentage scenario that I assume would start with the packaging of meth in baby bottle liners and later require sweet-talking a French-Canadian prison guard), The Jam would be it. Amazing songbook, over 100 tracks and almost no filler.

Dayenu Ross and the Supreme Semites

I was hoping to find decent examples of a band pulling off a respectable Klezmer/Motown sound and vibe. Instead, I stumbled upon this. Weird Al's competition.

On Prog Rock and The Decembrists

Rick Wakeman of Yes and the Prog Rock band name generator

Chicago Sun-Times (via Largehearted Boy):
The best progressive rock, it must be said, never skimped on the second half of that equation, delivering powerful riffs and a tough rhythmic wallop along with its aspirations toward high art. Just go back and listen to those early '70s Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP and Genesis albums if you doubt it. Or better yet, break out the headphones and the black light and listen to [The Decembrists] "The Crane Wife," loud and often.

Earlier: Selling Manhattan By The Pound (Part I), The Bridges of Prog (Part II), Armadillos In Our Trousers (I particularly enjoy how the beginning of "Tarkus" captures the amphetamine psychosis of a Planet of the Apes fight scene.)

All The Aarons In The World Won't Save Us Now

In the Catching Up Dept., looks like Jeff Ott (Crimpshrine and Fifteen) has been doing the solo acoustic thing like some other aging punkers. Not bad. This one's called "Kiss the Rockstar" which Jawbreaker fans will quickly recognize as "Kiss the Bottle" with all kinds of insider East Bay references. I bet Davey Jalopnik could name them all.

More Jeff Ott on YouTube and his official site.
